THE PLANT OF STEVIA
WHAT IS IT?
It is a plant of the asteraceae family. It owes it’s name, Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, to the Spanish sailor Pedro Esteve, and to the Italian botanist Rebaudio and Bertoni.
It’s composition based on steviosides and steviol glycosides, makes it a natural sweetener, alternative to sugar.
In countries like Japan, stevia accounts 40% of the sweeteners consumed.
It’s used to sweeten food, infusions, cofee, beverages and for table consumption.

The European Comission included Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni as food for the purposes of RE CE 258/1997, according to resolution 16 of July 2017, “The application only refers to herbal and fruit infusions containing or prepared with Stevia Rebudian Bertoni leaves, intented to be consumed as such. Such uses are not to be considered as new.”
